Members update September 2011

Coaching staff

Diane Bunyan back from Maternity leave
As you may know, our Head Coach Diane Bunyan returned from maternity leave in April.  On returning Diane wanted to take a bit of a step back without the time commitment that the Head coach role requires.  However with 22 years involvement, swimming and coaching with the club we agreed mutually that she should be kept involved as much as possible.  Also we want to make sure that baby Jay is in the pool as a Falkirk Otter as soon as possible!

Steven Binnie now Head Coach
Steven Binnie started coaching with the club in December 2011 to help cover Diane’s maternity leave.  I’ll give you a bit of an introduction, Steven also started his swimming career at Falkirk Otter ASC in 1998, leaving in 2004 to swim at Stirling as there was no performance swimming pathway here in Falkirk at that time.  Steven’s swimming highlights include attending the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth trials, the 2008 Olympic trials and competing at the British University games.  He was also part of the Medley Team, which broke the Scottish Short Course record for 4x50m medley relay, along with Todd Cooper, Andrew Hunter and Craig Houston.  Steven retired from swimming in August last year and starting coaching at Stirling and has now thrown himself enthusiastically into his coaching commitment at Falkirk.

I am happy to announce that Steven has agreed to take on the role of Head coach and has also increased his coaching qualifications to level II coaching, as this is a Scottish Swimming requirement for every club head coach by 2012.

Steven is of course going through a learning process as its huge step from competing, to squad coach to club Head coach in 1 year.  Therefore, he will be supported by Diane Bunyan, as well as all of our coaching staff and the F.I.R.S.T programme coaches Steven Tigg and Monica Borland.

Fraser Neilson, Emma Murray, Megan Risk ,Erin Risk, Ryan Davidson and Kirsty Park.

All of our coaches are ex Falkirk Otter swimmers also  - in fact Erin and Ryan are still swimming but give up their Sunday nights to help out.  They all show a huge amount of commitment to the squads, all have a passion to ensure that the club’s successes and accolades continue.  Megan is also a swimming teacher at one of our affiliated swim schools Aquatic Learning.

Eleanor McGlashan
Eleanor coaches our developer 1 squad on a Monday night.  Eleanor is a vastly experienced coach and swimming teacher and has been with the club longer than any existing member – even Diane!  A lot of our current performance swimmers started their swimming career with Eleanor.

Eric Adams
Eric has a long association with the club as a parent, coach and president of the club.  He was also involved in the group working with Scottish Swimming and Falkirk Council to establish the F.I.R.S.T programme.

Russell Macaloney
Russell is our Water Polo coach and is also an ex swimmer and water polo player.   He is developing our water polo section and producing great results already, another successful squad in the making there, mainly down to Russell’s dedication and passion for the sport.

Developers Coach
As a result of the expansion within the club and recognising the need to continually improve the pathway for the swimmers, Diane has agreed to take on responsibility for the developer squads.  The club membership is at its highest in recent times and we want to make sure that all developer swimmers get the attention and pool space that they deserve.  Developers is one of the most crucial learning point for the swimmers so with increased numbers we want to make sure we provide the best we can for every swimmer.

Therefore we will be moving the developer squads back to the Mariner centre for Monday night training.  This is being done to provide more pool space for these swimmers and we are also increasing the coach ratio on a Monday and Wednesday night when the developers are swimming.

In addition to this role Diane will also be available for extra support for the coaching staff when required.

Training Timetable

A new timetable for training will start from Monday 24 October.  We are still securing some pool time for this and so more details will be issued shortly.
The reason for moving some of the squad times is to provide more pool time and better use of the facilities for all members.   We have always strived as a club to make any changes required to benefits the swimmers rather than keep a rigid structure and squad numbers.  If a swimmers is ready they will move up, no matter if the next squad has high numbers and we will aim to provide the pool time and coaching that each squad requires.

We are also introducing a further 2 hours of swimming training, available to the Water Polo squad or any other swimmers who perhaps want to take a step back from competitive swimming but keep their skills and fitness up.

Squad Changes

Squad promotions will be issued to swimmers over the next couple of days.  Squad changes will be effective from Monday 3 October and swimmers should attend their new squad session from that date.  This is slightly later than anticipated, due to the work required to make these coaching changes and training timetable restructure.
All swimmers not moving this time, please keep up your training and listen to your coaches.  It does not do any good to move too early, it also does not mean that you are not going to reach your potential, each swimmer develops differently and at different rates during sporting progression.  If you are not changing squads this time then the decision has been made in your best interest.    If you have any questions or concerns, or need any clarification of the above please talk to your coach about this.

Stirling Polo Match, 1st July 2011

Thanks to all who took part in the first match by our new Water Polo section on Friday 1st July.

All the hard work in training has paid off with some excellent play in both attack and defense. There were goals galore in a close match that ended 7-7.

Falkirk led for most of the game and only a late surge by Stirling in the last 2 minutes brought the scores level.

Thanks also to all the supporters who came along to cheer the team on.

Falkirk Integrated Regional Swim Team Age Group Development Squad

As you may already know, Falkirk Integrated Regional Swim Team (FIRST) is a joint venture between Falkirk Otter ASC, Bo’ness ASC and Falkirk council to improve performance swimming in the Falkirk area. It's intention is to provide a development path for our swimmers to enable them to develop and compete at the highest levels including National level and has been an outstanding success in it's mission.

We are now in a position to extend the FIRST opportunity to a wider selection of our swimmers with the introduction of the FIRST Age Group Development Squad.

This squad is aimed at swimmers between 11and 13 yrs of age and will build to around 24 swimmers in size over a period of time. They will follow a program based around both West District and Scottish National Age Group level with a view to some qualifying for British National Age Group Championships.

The squad will be led by FIRST Age Group Development Coach Monica Borland, who brings over 10 years coaching experience with athletes from district, National and International level. Monica is responsible for all aspects of the squad, most notably the training and competition program. She also has a remit to work closely with partner clubs.

There is a specific criteria for selection as follows:-

Entry Criteria

NOTE: Meeting the above does not automatically mean selection. All movement is at the coach’s professional discretion.

Swimmers who meet the above criteria have already been identified and offered a place with the FIRST Age Group Development Squad which will begin from Monday 20th September.

Good look to those swimmers on this new and challenging opportunity within the club!

FALKIRK INTEGRATED REGIONAL SWIM TEAM (F.I.R.S.T.)

From 28th July to 1st August, Falkirk Integrated Regional Swim Team, F.I.R.S.T., consisting of swimmers from Falkirk Otter ASC and Boness ASC, competed at the British ASA Age Group Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. In total eight swimmers between the ages of 11 and 14 qualified to swim at this event which is the highest level of competition for Age Group swimmers in the UK. FIRST was set up just over 4 years ago as a joint venture between Falkirk Council, Falkirk Otters and Boness Swimming Clubs and the number of swimmers qualifying to compete at this level shows that the level of performance swimming in the Falkirk area has risen emphatically through this programme and that we have created an environment where those athletes with the ability, appetite and determination to succeed at the highest level can!

The swimmers were supported throughout the event by FIRST Head Coach Steven Tigg whose advice and meticulous preparation ensured the swimmers could perform at their best.

Undoubted star of the team was 13 yr old Charlotte McKenzie who came away with two titles. She won the 100 Backstroke title for the third succesive year in a time of 1.04.94, just outside her own Scottish Record. She also improved on her silver medal last year by winning the 200 Backstroke title in a time of 2.20.51, breaking her own Scottish record which she had set in the morning heats! Charlotte qualified for the final of the 200 IM finishing in 10th place. Charlotte also competed in the 400 IM and 100 Fly.

13 year old Dale McAnish had a heavy programme competing in 6 individual events and two relays! On the second day of the meet, Dale qualified for the final of 200 Fly and 200 IM. He finished in 6th place in the 200 Fly in a time of 2.22.83 and repeated this result in the 200 IM Final in a new personal best time of 2.21.65. Dale then qualified for the final of the 100 Fly, again finishing in 6th place in a new personal best time of 1.03.26. The other events in which Dale competed were 100 and 200 Breast and 400 IM.

13 year old Rebecca Murray swam a very strong 1500 Freestyle, finishing in a time of 19.15.83, just outside her personal best.

The boys relay team of Dale McAnish, Ian Elrick, Scott Campbell and Duncan Scott competed in the 4 x 100 Freestyle and 4 x 200 Freestyle relays. In both events, they finished top Scottish team; knocking 3 seconds off their qualifying times from the Scottish Nationals in April.

The girls relay team of Charlotte McKenzie, Kayley Davidson, Lauren Yorston and Rebecca Murray also finished top Scottish team in the 4 x 100 Medley relay, knocking a whopping 6 seconds off their qualifying time set when the took the Gold medal in the Scottish Nationals in April.

The following week it was the turn of the older swimmers to compete. From 3rd to 7th August the British ASA Youth Championships took place where four of the 15 to 18 yr old boys competed.

Ross Muir (18) had a heavy programme with 6 swims and three relays. Ross took the Bronze medal in his favoured event, the 400 IM, just outside his personal best. He also qualified for three other finals finishing 6th in the 200 Back, 9th in the 200 Breast and 10th in the 200IM. Ross will now have a rest before heading to Delhi with the Scotland Commonwealth Games team where he has been invited to go along for the invaluable experience of being at a multi sport event.

Ryan Davidson (17) qualified to swim in 5 events. Ryan set new personal bests in two of his swims. In the 200 IM he knocked 2 seconds off his pb with a time of 2.14.55, in the 200 Back his time came down 3 seconds with a new pb of 2.12.69. He also competed in 100 Back, 100 Breast and 200 Breast.

Gregor Birrell (15) qualified for both the 100 and 200 Backstroke. He swam superbly setting a new personal best of 1.03.16 in the 100 Back and finishing just outside his personal best in the 200.

Ramsay Elfendi (15) qualified for the 200 Butterfly and had a really strong swim to knock a second off his personal best and set a time of 2.14.43.

The boys relay team of Ross Muir, Gregor Birrell, Ryan Davidson and Ramsay Elfendi competed in the 4 x 100 Freestyle, 4 x 200 Freestyle and 4 x 100 Medley relays. They swam really well in times just outside the qualifying times set at Scottish Nationals in April.

Falkirk Otter Selected for World Class Development Programme

Ross Muir, who has been a Falkirk Otter since the age of six and now trains with the Stirling Performance Squad based at Stirling University, has been selected onto the World Class Development London, Rio and Beyond Programme. This follows Ross's performance at the British Gas Long Course Championships in Sheffield earlier in the month where he broke the Scottish Record in the 400 IM.

This programme is run by Chris Martin now the British Development Coach. The programme involves Camps ,competitions, visits from Chris to Stirling and most importantly some extra funding (will help with the student lifestyle). This is a fantastic achievement and we wish Ross the very best of luck for the future.

Swimsuit Rules 2010

As we all know, the requirements for swimsuits will change from 1st January 2010.

Here are the official "FINA REQUIREMENTS FOR SWIMWEAR APPROVAL".

Also, this is a good article, and will help explain the issues: http://www.swimnews.com/News/view/7159

In summary:-

The long and short of it is that men can only wear trunks or shorts, they cannot go past the knee or above the navel and women can only wear swimsuits that do not go past the knee, do not cover the neck or go past the shoulders and also they cannot have any fastenings i.e. zippers.

So, the bodysuit will be banned and all suits must be made of textiles. Gone too will be the polyurethane and other non-textile fabrics that have helped to push time standards in the race pool through a timewarp in the past year.

FIRST Squad Canet 2009

The swimmers with Garvie Murray, (back row left), Steven Tigg (next to Garvie) and Richard Wyatt (back row, right)

A total of fifteen FIRST (Falkirk Integrated Regional Swim Team) squad members are due to undertake a seven day long, intensive warm weather training camp at Canet, in the South of France.  They will be accompanied on the camp by FIRST Head Coach, Steven Tigg and team manager, Garvie Murray.

The purpose of the trip is to further early preparations for the up coming season in an environment not available in the UK. The swimmers will have access to the Canet en Roussilion Swimming Complex which houses one ten lane 50m outdoor pool and one indoor 6 lane 25m pool with two, two hour swim sessions each day plus one and a half hours of land work.  They will cover between 6.5 and 8 kilometres each session, culminating in around 75 kilometres in the week.

FIRST is a partnership set up in late 2005 between Bo'ness ASC, Falkirk Otter ASC and Falkirk Council to develop performance swimming in the Falkirk area.  It allows for more training and competitive opportunities for those swimmers from the top tier of the partner clubs who demonstrate the necessary commitment, attitude and ability to further their swimming careers that began with their clubs.  FIRST is headed by a full time coach and provides up to twenty hours training time per week.

In its short history it has managed to establish itself as one of the leading performance development programmes in Scotland and continues to grow.  The FIRST Junior programme is rapidly expanding with the support of the two feeder clubs which should help the programme to continue to make a name for itself.

The squad are pictured with Richard Wyatt from Traffic Management Company, Coneworx who kindly donated 20 poloshirts for the squad to wear on the trip.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the programme should contact either club.

Family Night & Fundraiser - October 02 '09

Hope you are now all well rested and have recovered from a great night on Friday!
We managed to raise a massive £1687, so thanks to you all, the turn out and support on the night was fantastic and it showed how committed we are as a club.

A massive thanks to Yvonne and Nichola for all the hard work they did in organising the night and getting support from the business community with raffle prizes. The guys on the disco did a great job on the night as well. There were some great moves on the dancefloor from some of the youngsters! Thanks also to Lesley who dealt admirably with ticket sales and keeping count of the money before and during the event.
Can I also thank Richard from Coneworx (Lesley's big wee brother!) for kindly donating the decanter which raised £150 in the auction. The support we have had from Coneworx has been great and is greatly appreciated. They have also kindly donated 20 black polo shirts to the FIRST squad who are off to France on Thursday for a week of warm weather training. Check the website and Herald for more information on this.
It was great to have Euan Cameron from Real Radio there to help with the auction and I am sure lots of the swimmers will have autographs and pictures as keepsakes!
So once again, a massive thanks from the committee and hopefully this is the start of a bright new future for the club!

Look out also for the photo album coming soon, thanks again to Lesley's camera work!

British Age Group Championships, Ponds Forge, Sheffield, July 22nd - July 26th 2009

Falkirk Otter ASC had its biggest team of swimmers ever at the above championships with sensational results and performances.

Charlotte and Dale

Dale and Charlotte with their well deserved medals

Charlotte McKenzie

Charlotte won the Girls 12yrs 100m Backstroke , becoming British Champion for the second year running. Charlotte lead the race from start to finish, breaking the Scottish record with a time of 1.07.98. Charlotte had already won the Silver medal in the 200m Backstroke  in  a race she had lead all the way, but was pipped for gold by 0.01 secs. She also qualified for the final of the 200IM finishing in 9th place.

Dale McAnish

Dale won Silver in the Boys 12yrs 100m Butterfly. Dale lead the race after the first length and although over taken on the second length he fought back strongly just missing out on the Gold by 0.11secs. His time of 1.04.50 broke the existing Scottish record but sadly the Gold medallist was also Scottish so takes the record. Dale had already won the Bronze medal in the 200IM where he really pulled out a huge swim with a fantastic PB. Dale also qualified for the 100m Freestyle final finishing in 8th place with a 1.5 second pb.

Gregor Birrell

Gregor, swimming in his first British Championships, swam a pb in the Boys 14yrs 200m Backstroke with a time of 2.21.39 and also swam a time of 1.05.66 in the 100m Backstroke.

Ian Elrick

Ian, also swimming in his first British Championships, swam a time of 1.08.06 in the Boys 13yrs 100 Butterfly.

It was a tremendous achievement from the swimmers to qualify for the event and to go out and perform under the pressure of the biggest Championships for age group swimmers in this country is a credit to them and to FIRST Head Coach Steven Tigg.
